This Garbo pendant light, designed by Mariyo Yagi for Sirrah in the early 1970s, unfolds in space like a luminous and shimmering cascade.
Mariyo Yagi is a Japanese sculptor whose practice is rooted in her Nawa rope principle: spiral energy and the idea of human beings as metaphorical rope, twisted and twined to become stronger together. Her collaboration with Italian lighting producer Sirrah reflects the growing exchange between Italian manufacturers and Japanese designers of the era, including Kazuhide Takahama and Shiro Kuramata.
The Garbo series designed for Dino Gavina, produced by Sirrah harnesses Yagi’s rope motif in a fringe of light. A triangular ceiling box houses 3 bulbs that illuminate the interior of a long rope curtain. The light is both sculptural and functional, a beautiful partition within spaces.
